Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for good health. Unfortunately, your body doesn't make these acids. Two very important omega-3 fatty acids are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Fish is the primary source for EPA and DHA, but most people simply do not eat enough fish. Many turn to supplements to achieve the documented benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids.
Promoting Heart Health
The American Heart Association states "Randomized clinical trials have shown that omega-3 fatty acid supplements can reduce cardiovascular events (death, non-fatal heart attacks, non-fatal strokes). They can also slow the progression of arteriosclerosis in coronary patients."1
In an official statement from the American Heart Association, co-authors William S. Harris, Ph.D., and Lawrence J. Appel, M.D., M.P.H. state that "the mechanisms responsible for omega-3 fatty acids reduction of CVD risk are still being studied, research has shown:
Decreased risk of sudden death and arrhythmia.
Decreased thrombosis (blood clot).
Decreased triglyceride levels.
Decreased growth of arteriosclerosis plaque.
Improved arterial health.
Lower blood pressure.2
Promoting Joint Health
Omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) also have therapeutic uses. Research is in the early stages, but the anti-inflammatory properties of fish oil can help promote joint health. This includes reducing the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, including pain and inflammation.
Brain Health
Omega-3 fatty acids also been shown to improve brain function in the elderly. In a study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry (2002; 159:477-479), Omega-3 showed potential benefits for treating depression in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
More Benefits are Being Found
Recent studies have shown Omega-3 can reduce macular degeneration, and aid in the treatment of "dry eye."
